Center for Unmet, Rare, & Emerging Diseases
Mechanism-first discovery science for social good
CURED brings Berkeley’s deepest science to the diseases the world has left behind, from rare genetic conditions to the next global pandemic, pursuing the fundamental biology that turns neglected diseases into curable ones.

CURED Pillars
One approach. Many diseases.
CURED does mechanism-first discovery science: fundamental research into what makes serious diseases begin, how they progress, and what it would take to stop or reverse them. Rather than approaching one disease at a time, we work at the level of the biological mechanisms that many diseases share, so that a single discovery can unlock treatments across an entire class of conditions.
Immunology is the unifying thread. The immune system sits at the center of all four of our pillars, which means an insight in one can open new approaches in the others.
Drawing on discovery science and technologies developed across the Berkeley campus, including the Innovative Genomics Institute, the Molecular Therapeutics Initiative, and the Stem Cell Center, CURED connects each discovery to the Bay Area’s philanthropic, venture capital, and biotech communities to move it from the laboratory toward the clinic.
Redefining what’s curable takes more than science.
CURED is powered by visionary philanthropy. A founding gift names a pillar, builds a laboratory, and accelerates cures for the patients the market leaves behind, funding the discovery science that no one else will pursue.
Berkeley has done this before. CRISPR gene editing and immune checkpoint inhibition, two of the most consequential biomedical breakthroughs of the last century, both began here, with scientists asking fund
